“Amanda lives for the difficult task. She can take care of business!” Judge Stephen B. Ables, 216th District Court, Kerr County, Texas
Professional Biography Amanda Hill graduated magna cum laude from Texas Tech University with a degree in public relations and a minor in English. While at Tech, Amanda sang alto in the University Choir, was a member of the university honors program, worked as a resident assistant in the campus dorms, and worked her way through school as a youth director at two different Methodist churches.
Following graduation from college, Amanda was called upon by the city of Lubbock, Texas, to oversee the municipality’s Y2K compliance effort. The program quickly impressed state leaders, who viewed the city’s protocol as a model for others to follow. When Lubbock was asked by the State of Texas to present the city’s successes to some of Texas’ largest municipal governments, including Dallas, Houston and Austin, Lubbock officials turned to Amanda. “At the time,” Amanda stated, “Y2K was a very real concern for cities, and Lubbock led the effort in making sure it was fully prepared for what could have been a technical disaster. I was proud to travel the state and speak on the city’s behalf.”
Following up one difficult challenge with another, Amanda began classes at the Texas Tech University School of Law in the fall of 1998, where she was active in Law Review as a staff member, articles editor, and author. While at Tech Law, Amanda interned for then Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen. “Working for the Texas Supreme Court was a tremendous honor,” Amanda stated. “The time I was there solidified my love for the law and my deep respect for the hard work of our judiciary.” Amanda explains her law school experience as an opportunity for her to combine her love of communication with an entirely new way of “thinking like a lawyer.” “Effective advocacy demands innovative thinking,” says Amanda. “In no profession is that more true than mine.”
Amanda then worked as a staff attorney for the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs. She saw her position at the VA as an opportunity not only to work for an organization with a nation-wide reach, but as a chance to combine the legal skills she learned in school with the business management skills she acquired from her practical experiences. Her responsibilities required her to balance a heavy medical malpractice and employment law caseload while serving as in-house counsel to several major VA hospitals and related agency support operations. These challenges gave Amanda the opportunity to work closely with VA management while tackling tough legal issues.
In addition to these responsibilities, the VA Office of General Counsel in Washington, D.C. asked Amanda to chair a nation-wide work group in order to implement a best practices exchange program to be used by VA attorneys across the country. Amanda earned commendation from the VA’s Office of General Counsel for her efforts. Amanda also established a legal internship program and was appointed team leader in her region for the collection of insurance premiums as part of the VA’s Medical Care Cost Recovery program. Because of her natural charisma, Amanda was also asked to participate in a nationwide training video dealing with federal ethics rules, playing – appropriately enough – an aggressive prosecutor.
Amanda is now General Counsel and Director of Patient and Provider Relations for a large multi-specialty medical clinic in Austin, Texas, where she oversees compliance, peer review, and in-house legal matters.
Television Despite almost a million applicants across the country, Amanda Hill was selected to be one of the final sixteen candidates to be an apprentice to Martha Stewart and work for Martha Stewart Omnimedia. She appeared on NBC’s “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart” in Fall of 2005 vying for a spot in Martha’s company, making it to the final seven. During the show, Amanda was instrumental in writing and publishing a children’s book; putting together a one-day flower shop; renovating a 2,000 square foot suite in the Westin Times Square; creating a traveling billboard and promotional campaign for Tide; designing, baking, and selling a high-end wedding cake at a bridal expo in New York City; negotiating packages from Fran Drescher and Broadway stars for a celebrity auction; and creating and selling an original salad dressing for Wishbone Dressing. She returned to help assist the eventual winner in putting together a runway fashion show in New York City for Liz Claiborne. The Apprentice experience gave Amanda a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to use her creative talents as well as her business skills in one of the greatest cities in the world. She learned many lessons from Martha as well as her competitors on the show, who she continues to talk to on a regular basis. Although her professional life is just getting started, Amanda Hill has already established herself as an all purpose go-to person for important challenges. Hard work, dedication, professionalism, and an insatiable appetite for success all come together to form the bedrock of her professional and academic pursuits.
